Seiko has expanded its Presage Craftsmanship Series with a new mechanical wristwatch that celebrates Japanese artistry. This latest model features a deep, glossy black dial crafted using traditional urushi lacquer techniques and includes a GMT function, allowing wearers to track two time zones simultaneously. Urushi lacquer, a durable natural material, has been a part of Japanese culture for centuries, often used on bowls and plates. The watch's dial is meticulously created under the guidance of lacquer artist Isshu Tamura, with craftsmen applying and polishing the lacquer in layers to achieve a unique luster without compromising the movement of the hands.
The design draws inspiration from Kanazawa lacquerware, highlighted by a subtle gold GMT hand and 24-hour markers that complement the rich black dial. White bar indexes and polished hands provide clear readability, enhancing the watch's refined look. The watch is completed with a leather strap crafted by a Leather Working Group-certified tannery, reinforcing Seiko’s commitment to sustainability. Image courtesy of Seiko
