Mateus, known for its joyful and playful designs, celebrates 30 years of helping people express their style and mood through their table settings. The anniversary is marked by an exclusive exhibition at Nordiska Kompaniet, created by the award-winning creative studio Ray Atelier.
Mateus was founded in 1994 by Teresa Mateus Lundahl and the journey started with a yellow plate decorated with blue spirals, combining Swedish design with traditional Portuguese craftsmanship. Teresa never imagined her brand would become a global success, but it organically grew with demand, and seeing Mateus products in prestigious stores like Bloomingdale’s in New York and Los Angeles was a dream come true. “These years have been a wonderful journey. We are so happy to have contributed to making meals, parties, picnics, and other occasions more fun and personal.”
Filippa Burenstam Linder, Teresa’s business partner and daughter, joined the company in 2014, bringing new collections, ideas, and marketing strategies. Despite its international fame, Mateus remains true to its roots, with products still handmade and hand-painted by skilled artisans in Portugal. One unique feature of Mateus is that all products – nearly 600 in total – can be mixed and matched. Each new product or collection is designed to complement the existing range, allowing customers to continue collecting and combining over the years.
The anniversary exhibition at NK is a tribute to the store’s long-standing partnership with Mateus, being the first to carry their products.
